The status of many popular high elevation 4x4 trails in Colorado is listed below and updated as the trails open or close. The list includes the main trails plus some 2wd access roads. The voluntary updates come from many sources, including the National Forest service, the BLM, and interested individuals. As the Colorado mountain weather can be highly unpredictable, please check with the relevant information body yourself for any recent changes. Conditions can change without notice. It is also subjective - a trail one person says is open, may be considered too dangerous to travel by another.

As a guide, you can view the dates and information from the 2017 season, 2016 season, 2015 season, 2014 season, 2013 season, 2012 season, 2011 season, 2010 season, 2009 season, 2008 season, 2007 season, 2006 season, 2005 Season, 2004 Season,2003 Season, the 2002 Season or the 2001 Season.

This list is intended as a guide only and no responsibility is taken for any incident arising from mis-information. The ultimate responsibility as to whether the trail is safe to travel, within the capabilities of yourself and your vehicle, or indeed open at all, is taken by YOU. If in doubt, DO NOT TRAVEL. The inclusion of any trail on this page does not mean it is open or legal to travel. Conditions change, and trail status may change, often without warning. Use common sense, and do not go around closure barriers. YOU have responsibility for your own actions and all of these trails should be considered TRAVEL AT YOUR OWN RISK AND RESPONSIBILITY.

Want information on these trails? Trail Damage is excellent. Directions, descriptions, maps, ratings - everything you could want to know. Check them out!

REMEMBER - TREAD LIGHTLY

COMMENTS:
7/4/18 - Open and clear of snow all the way to the top.
5/25/18 - The trail is dry and clear until the mine. There is some water flowing across the road a few times and some puddles but for the majority it is dry. As soon as you reach the mine, the following trails up the rest of the way are blocked by substantial snow drifts. Some people have tried to go through them but have not made it very fall based on the tracks. Snow blocking trail after the mine.
5/19/18 - Open all the way to the mine. Not quite all the way up to the pass. Plowed through some snow but the tracks should be good for anyone to follow Open 95% of the way up. The last stretch to the pass summit still has too much snow on it...another few weeks.
5/6/18 - No, we turned around at about 10,800' due to snow - distance from trailhead ~3 miles. Up to that point trail was in good shape. The snow was soft with a layer of ice underneath so it was very easy to get stuck and lose traction.

COMMENTS:
6/16/18 - We made it to the lake today. We had to go through a few snow piles as we neared the lake but we weren't the first through. The worst was at the bottom of the big downhill to the lake but it didn't seem to stop anyone. I imagine that it will be gone in a week or so. Otherwise, the trail is in regular condition. It appeared that several vehicles had driven off the road near the top. Please stay on the trail.
6/9/18 - Open to near the top about a mile from the lake heavy snow drifting.
3/18/18 - When we got to the chutes, there wasn't much snow at the bottom, but there was a thick layer of ice. When you get to the turn in the chute, that is where the snow was drifted pretty deep. The snow was a very soft, light, and icy snow that didn't compact at all. Once you broke the crust, you sunk to the bottom and then hit solid ice before the dirt so there was no traction. We had to winch the corner but were able to drive the rest of the way through the chute. Above the chute the trail is covered in nothing but deep snow. We only made it 1.6 miles from the parking area which isn't even to the split with Miller Creek. This was before the storm that rolled in, so it's going to be quite awhile before the trail is even doable beyond the Chutes.

COMMENTS:
5/28/18 - Not open all the way. Passable until about 1/4 mile or less from Lower Chinns. Mainly dirt until the last climb up to Chinns. Drifted in the shade and trees. Was able to make it up nearly all the way to the lake but was stopped by a long drift about 3 or 4 ft deep on the uphill side, covering 90% of the trail. Downhill side of the trail is dirt. Passable if you shovel the drift, but not sure how long it is. Winching most likely necessary to make it to the lake.

Boulder 303-541-2500 Closed 11/26/18
COMMENTS:
11/26/18 - The Coney Flats 4WD road was seasonally closed on Monday November 26.
6/24/18 - The Middle St. Vrain and Coney Flats network was opened on June 24. Trailridge Runners 4WD Club seasonal opening with the Forest Service saw only a few downed trees. All the obstacles are still intact. Main work this year was to block off the shallow lake at Coney Flats and repair 2/3 of the foot bridge that crosses Coney Creek up top.
7/1/18 - These trails are finally open all the way through. I started and Camp Dick and left at through Beaver reservoir. Very low water levels along the entire trail. The Reservoir was down by 10' or better.
6/16/18 - The trail is still closed by the forest service. A ranger said it may be open by late June or early July. There is no snow in the area but they said they have a lot of downed trees to clear.
Coon Hollow BLM Grand Junction 303-239-3600 Open 5/6/18
COMMENTS:
5/6/18 - Coon Hollow is open. The spring was hard on the trail in places. Deep wash crossings are deeper and with one bank cut vertically for difficult entry or exit. The overall trail difficulty is a bit increased. Still a moderately difficult trail with some severe off-camber and steep climbs on loose, rocky ground. Great scenery and a fun trail. Some brush will leave stripes.

COMMENTS:
7/16/18 - The Glacier Peak alternative trail that joins up with The Middle Fork of Swan River was open all the way. The "Narrow, Tippy Shelf Road" has had been leveled quite flat. Hill Number 10 or SOB Hill was a straightforward downhill requiring good tire placement and without issues. Climbing this hill would require lockers both ends and if wet strong possibility of breakage.
6/19/18 - Georgia pass is open all the way to the summit. There is no snow coming from the southside, but we did see some coming down the south fork of Swan River.
3/18/18 - Snow line comes down to 9500 feet and the snow quickly gets deep. Only passed the Michigan Creek {gate closed} spur about a mile before it was too deep to continue. Snow looks flat and shallow but in reality it is 2 feet deep, very powdery and quicksand like. It was a fun day winching for hours but don't plan on going very far up the trail. Typically we make it to the last switchback before the top, yesterday's trek traveled a mile in 3 hour of winching past the Michigan Creek spur. Travel with half your rigs equipped with winches or be stuck for awhile. Good luck and have fun.

10/03/18 - Both 110 and 110j open all the way to top. The gate at Crystal Mine was open, and we saw no signs, so drove to the top of the Jeep road. Very pretty! The road up to the mine was open also. The spur, 110J, to Iron Mike Mine, is open all the way to top also. 110 easy all the way and in good shape. 110J has a hard section about 50 yards long that gave us a little challenge with 35 inch tires on lifted TJ and lockers! Rest of 110J was easy/moderate. Very pretty trails!
6/10/18 - No - estimated we got 3/4 of the way up spur road 110J. We made it 3/4 of the way up to the end of the trail. Snow bashed through a couple of the drifts but the next one would have taken too long.
5/26/18 - Trail is open all the way to the Champion Mill Gate... There is a sign at the gate stating no motor vehicles allowed beyond that point... also confirmed that with the MVUM Trail was in good condition... water levels were lower than normal for this time of year... probably 2-3' river

6/3/8 - From Telluride, it is open clear up to the town of Tomboy. Rocky and rough but not to an unusual extent. Passable for most 4x4s

6/8/18 - Trail is open to the top. Trail is in great shape. Very chunky rock/small boulders for first 3/4-1 mile. Only a couple small drifts/patches of snow on one side of the trail at tree line. This snow does not impede any travel.
5/18/18 - Partially Open - Trail is dry and clear for 1.8 miles until you hit large, off-camber snow drifts covering the majority of the road at the avalanche chute. Beyond this, the road appeared dry again. If a group of folks with shovels go up, they could probably make quick work of the drifts, otherwise I don't think it will melt out for a few weeks. Photos of the trail here and here..

All the obstacles are still intact. Main work this year was to block off the shallow lake at Coney Flats and repair 2/3 of the foot bridge that crosses Coney Creek up top.
6/16/18 - The trail is still closed by the forest service. A ranger said it may be open by late June or early July. There is no snow in the area but they said they have a lot of downed trees to clear.

Trailridge Runners 4WD Club project this year repaired the obstacle on the south side of the river to allow access to the MVUM roads on the south side of the South St. Vrain river. There is no connection to Overland drive from the south side, you will have to return the way you came.
3/24/18 - Trail is fully open and passable to vehicles built for off road use. High clearance and good off road tires should be fine to get you everywhere up there for the remainder of the snow season. One tree down and blocking the trail between Miller rock and glacier view ranch. A chain saw is needed to remove it. Even with the downed tree, 95% of the area is still accessible.

7/1/18 - Pearl Pass is now open. A short stretch of snow remains on the road in the upper boulder field, but should be free of snow in two more weeks.
7/1/18 - Trail is open from the Crested Butte side towards Aspen as it is easier to cross the snow field on Aspen side going down hill. It will be a few weeks more before the snow field is passible going up hill on the Aspen side. The snow field is about 100 feet long and approximately 2 to 3 feet deep or more. Very soft snow during the mid day. Easy to get stuck.
6/23/18 - Closed it is snow blocked 15.3 miles up the trail from Crested Butte. Another Jeep used a drone to fly over it and there are two drifts blocking the trail.

7/15/18 - Open all the way from marble to Crested Butte. One spot above the Punchbowl required driving over a big rock , no sweat for a stock Wrangler, not for SUVs.
7/3/17 - Open Via Paradise Basin (734). Snow Blocks pass via Gothic (317) road. According to Forest Service Devils punchbowl has a large rock that needs to be removed, allowing motorcycles only currently. Have FUN!
7/3/18 - Was able to cross easily over the snow drift between Gothic and Schofield. It was well compacted and hard. I would be a problem if it softens up. the road was labeled as closed when we got down near Gothic, but there were no signs coming down the pass from Paradise. it is closed to passenger cars, but most trucks with good tires could cross the drift today. If you are traveling up from Gothic, there may be a sign saying the road is closed, but the snow drift can ba driven over in a jeep. We drove a 2016 Rubicon with 36 inch tires.
6/15/18 - Trail is not open. Rock fall on Schofield between Crystal and Gothic. Snow still over road between Paradise Divide and Gothic. Last week a motorcycle user reported a large rock fall on the worst part of the shelf road. Based on the picture not sure how long it will take to clear once snow is gone. From the Paradise divide trail there is still a snow drift preventing connecting with Schofield. A cherokee tried to skirt around it and the side gave out so they had to get towed back up. We had heavy rain on 6/17 but it still probably needs another week or so to get to Schofield/Gothic from Paradise side. However Paradise is open all the way to the top.
4/30/18 - Mountain biked from Marble to the Crystal Mill. Clear all the way save for a 100 yard snow drift half a mile from the Mill that is covering the road, but well compacted and passable. Vehicles have made it through. Not sure how much farther it is open.

6/3/18 - Trail is open but there is one large snowdrift about 100 yards from the top that is still impassable. We parked at the last switchback from the top as there are no spots to turn around before the drift. Could probably be dug out if someone spent an afternoon with some shovels.
Tomichi Pass Gunnison/Gunnison 970-641-0471 Closed 8/21/18
COMMENTS:
8/21/18 - The slide is quite large. Doesn't look like it could be cleared without debris sliding down and blocking the lower shelf road just below it, so it's quite a mess. However, folks (presumably hikers and/or mountain bikers) have created a trail up and over the slide. (Just the width of a person - no way a vehicle could go over.) Hiked up a little beyond the slide, and I've been on some narrow shelf roads (Webster, Imogene, Ophir, Iron Chest, etc.), but dang, Tomichi is soooo narrow! Hard to imagine it ever being a 4x4 route again.
8/11/18 - Tomichi Pass is closed indefinitely. Rock slide on the eastern half (the dangerous section) and US Forest Service isn't sure what they are going to do yet.
6/20/18 - Tomichi Pass is closed indefinitely. There is a large rock slide starting up the East side. The USFS has posted a "No Motor Vehicle" sign where the trail joins the Hancock Pass trail. It is not know where the trail is closed when traveling West to East. It appears that repairing the trail would be extremely difficult and costly so this closure may be permanent. (Hopefully not!)

COMMENTS:
7/16/18 - Snow is gone & its open.
7/7/18 - Not open for two-track vehicles. Motorcycles are getting through a V-notch cut in the snow. Snow at the Red Cone junction.
7/1/18 - Still snowed in at the very top. Red Cone is open however. Another week or two for Webster I would guess.
6/21/18 - Went up the south side on two wheels. Almost made it to the top. Looks like about a 200 yard drift that is melting fast.
6/16/18 - North side of Webster is now open with a few snow drifts still remaining on the trail. Easily passable by modified rigs, should be fully melted for stock rigs very soon South side of pass is clear all the way to the snow cornice which is several weeks away from being melted out. The washout after the first switchback is tight.
6/9/18 - The trail is open to just before the second switchback, where a large drift about 4 feet deep covers the trail, blocking it for all vehicles. The two famous narrow/tippy spots between the first and second switchback are quite narrow and tippy, as they often are early in the season. There is also a steep bypass above the narrow spots that essentially cuts the switchback back down to the flatter part of the trail. I don't remember seeing this in past years, and I don't know if it's legal. Anyway, we walked the rest of the trail up as far as we could. There are a few smaller drifts higher up on the switchbacks that either partially or completely block the trail, and, not surprisingly for this early in the season, the summit is blocked by a huge snow cornice a few hundred yards from the summit. It will be quite some time before the trail is passable as a thru trail, but it's still a fun 4WD+hike in the meantime. Also be aware that on the lower parts of the trail! the forest service has designated many of the previous well-used dispersed camping spots as "no camping". We also drove the Handcart Gulch side, and it is fully open, but the same note about designated camping sites applies there as well.

8/14/18 - Weston Pass is open. The closure area is south of the pass. See attached map
7/1/18 - The trail is closed altogether due to the Weston Pass Fire. 285 is closed from 1 mi. South of Fairplay to Antero Junction. I'm sure the West side would be marked as well, as in closed altogether as that is the fire line.
6/29/18 - Closed - wildfire.
6/3/18 - Clear all the way. There is no snow near the trail.
5/13/18 - Weston Pass is passable on the east side to within 80 feet vertical from the summit. It looks like it is still impassable for awhile on the west side. Only a couple small patches of snow over the road passable for 2WD.
Wheeler Geological Area Rio Grande/Conejos 719-274-8971 Open 6/26/18
COMMENTS:
6/26/18 - The trail is open all the way to the pole fence at the end. We drove in with 5 Jeeps, camped overnight and drove out the next morning. While there are a lot of downed and dead trees, none of them were blocking the road. Careful driving with a Jeep JK was needed to avoid scraping the sides with tree ends. Trail was pretty dry with negligible creek crossings. We had a battery-powered chainsaw with us, but did not need it. Camping among the dead trees is a bit scary. Don't camp up there during a windstorm.
5/19/18 - Road was closed 5/19/18 at Hanson Mill. NFS states that they intend to open the road on 24 May. Although road was not open NFS said to expect mud and deadfall. Hiking trail had three downed trees across trail in first 50 yards.
Wheeler Lake Pike/South Park 719-836-2031 Closed 8/17 and 18 8/17/18
COMMENTS:
8/17/18 - An update to the below. The forest service will close the trail on the weekend of 17/18 August to allow the fence construction to take place. The trail will reopen after that.
8/17/18 - Open but congested due to fence construction. 8/17/18 and 8/18/18. There will be a major fencing project going on Friday and Saturday August 17th and 18th. The trail will be very congested with construction and assistant traffic and should be avoided. (unless you want to help :-) )
6/30/18 - The trail is open all the way to the lake. No snow near the trail. Water running down and across the trail in many places. A few easy to cross water ponds. We were the first to reach the lake but right behind us were two large groups 10-15. Hikers were out all along the trail. Spotted several people fishing at the lake.
6/10/18 - So the trail is clear all the way to the climb just before the lake. There is about 3 to 4 ft of snow still and the lake is still frozen. We spent the night at one of the site just below the climb, weather was chilly at night but not ok bad. The obstacles were challenging, nothing that an agressive SUV couldn't do. There were rocks pulled up on the first obstacle (The Flop). The next obstacle (The V) was in good shape, The stairs were tough due to the mud pit just before. The rest of the trail is overgrown and lots of water. Although the water is not deep there is plenty, very fast flowing creek just before the climb to the lake. It will probably be another few weeks before the lake is accessible. The obstacles were challenging, nothing that an agressive SUV couldn't do. 6/9/18 - Trail is open until the right turn just past bowling ball hill. Snow is packed in for about 20 yards. We parked and hiked the rest of the trail to the lake.
