BUSHDUCKS COLORADO JEEP TRAILS
WHEN ARE THEY PASSABLE?
DATES FOR 2010

Updated: 11/11/10

This is the page for the 2010 Colorado Pass page. You can add to this page and
UPDATE HERE FOR 2010

Or, as a general guide, check out the 2009 information

The status of many popular high elevation 4x4 trails in Colorado is listed below and updated as the trails open or close. The list includes the main trails plus some 2wd access roads. The voluntary updates come from many sources, including the National Forest service, the BLM, and interested individuals. As the Colorado mountain weather can be highly unpredictable, please check with the relevant information body yourself for any recent changes. Conditions can change without notice. It is also subjective - a trail one person says is open, may be considered too dangerous to travel by another.

As a guide, you can view the dates and information from the 2009 season, 2008 season, 2007 season, 2006 season, 2005 Season, 2004 Season,2003 Season, the 2002 Season or the 2001 Season.

This list is intended as a guide only and no responsibility is taken for any incident arising from mis-information. The ultimate responsibility as to whether the trail is safe to travel, within the capabilities of yourself and your vehicle, or indeed open at all, is taken by YOU. If in doubt, DO NOT TRAVEL. The inclusion of any trail on this page does not mean it is open or legal to travel. Conditions change, and trail status may change, sometimes without warning. Use common sense, and do not go around closure barriers.

REMEMBER - TREAD LIGHTLY

Argentine Pass/Waldorf Mine White River/Dillon 970-468-5400 Partially Open 10/23/10
COMMENTS:
10/23/10 - We got up a little bit past Santiago Mine but was forced to turn around because of the snow. As you go past Santiago mine, the snow drifts on the trail begin to get too high for stock vehicles and smaller ATVs. Of course, all of it could melt in a day or two of warm weather.
7/12/10 - The trail is open all the way. Trail overall is in great shape. Lots of stream crossings. All spurs we attempted were in great shape with nothing getting in our way.
7/10/10 - Open all the way to the top with now snow. Trail is still narrow at the top, but passible in stock 4x4.
6/27/10 - The trail is open until about 1/4 of a mile from the top where you will encounter snow fields. A lot of digging will get you past there.
5/31/10 - Open up to the Waldorf. Argentine road is impassable still. Couple "tippy spots" due to snow.

Alpine Tunnel San Isabel/Salida 719-539-3591 Open 6/15/10
COMMENTS:
6/15/10 - The road is open all of the way to the tunnel.
6/2/10 - Clear of snow to Woodstock. Drifts of snow after that have the road closed.

Black Bear Pass Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Open 9/29/10
COMMENTS:
9/29/10 - Open all the way. In 30 years of driving Black Bear I have never seen it so rough and difficult as it is now. Before at least there used to be plenty of talus rock to "cushion" the lower part of the road that goes from the meadow down to the switchbacks. Now there's just bare boulders, ledges, very uneven surfaces (to say the least). I have a '79 CJ-5 and I made it OK during totally dry, sunny conditions, but I will never drive Black Bear again if it is going to always be this bad.
7/8/10 - Trail open all the way from the east. Good road all the way, switchbacks seem normal 7/7/10 - Trail is open all the way, from Silverton. Some snow banks on the side of the hills but no problem, flowers are great lower down the pass, switch backs seem normal.... but weather was cold on our trip.
7/6/10 - Black Bear is open all the way, and in great shape all the way.
7/2/10 - Spoke with the Forest Service at 970-240-5300 and they stated Black Bear Pass was open.
7/1/10 - Open as per San Miguel County Road and Bridge Department.
5/13/10 - Closed according to the Forest Service.

Open 5/16/10
COMMENTS:
5/16/10 - Trail is open all the way from Silverton to Lake City. A little muddy in spots but a stock 4x4 should be able to make it.
5/8/10 - The Alpine Loop is open from Silverton to Animas Forks and then Cinnamon to Lake City. Plenty of snow up there! We turned around at the Cinnamon/Engineer Pass junction - just ran out of time today. The Silverton Visitor Center shows Cinnamon open all the way. The D6 is sitting just up Engineer where we turned around.
5/3/10 - From Silverton the trail has snow removed to Animas Forks. Snow is moderately deep at Animas Forks so we did not continue.

COMMENTS:
11/7/10 - About 2 miles form the top of pass coming up from Tincup, there is about a foot of snow when you reach the top there are 2-4 foot snow drifts, and a vehicle is blocking the pass about a 1/2 mile from the top, does not look like it will be moved till all the snow melts.
6/13/10 - Open with no snow across road.

6/24/10 - The Deer Creek gate is now open!!!!
6/9/10 - The closure gates are still closed. Based on history they will probably stay closed for another one to two weeks. The rivers in the general area, the Blue, Swan, and Snake are all running very high.

COMMENTS:
7/18/10 - Open all the way....good travel both directions. Relatively easy pass....few spots of loose rock on the uphill grade but no major size rocks....couple of creek crossings...spotted bears in the higher elevations.
7/2/10 - Pass open all the way. Excellent trail condion road serface was hard. San Juan River crossing are easy.
6/17/10 - The trail is open all the way through. Trees have been cut where they have fallen across the road, water crossings are safe, and there are no particulalry difficult obstacles or road failures.
6/5/10 - The trail is not passable. We were headed to Summitville from the south and we encountered impassable snow 2 miles from the summit.

Engineer Pass Uncompahgre/Ouray
BLM/Gunnison
970-240-5300
970-641-0471
Open 6/3/10
COMMENTS:
6/3/10 - Open all the way. I was the first to travel after the Dozer. It was slushy at the top on the East side.
5/31/10 - If you come from Silverton & Animas Forks you can go to the top of Engineer Pass and the lookout. It is not plowed any farther than this so the only pass open to Lake City is Cinnamon Pass. Lower Engineer Trail is also closed (this is sometimes called Minneral Creek trail. If you come from Animas Forks you can make it a little past the Poughkeepsie Gulch fork.
5/26/10 - as in Animas Forks and saw the dozer coming back down from Engineers so decided to give it a try rather than Cinnamon. Open all the way through now. They even cleared Oh! Point. It's muddy and a bit rough but its open. Ran it in two Jeep Wranglers with no difficulty as were others on the trail today. Lots of run off and muddy but no real problems.
5/26/10 - About 1 mile left to plow at the top this morning. Water truck driver said hopefully they'll finish today. Water runoff on the west side ices up on the road overnight. Plan for late morning or afternoon.
5/8/10 - Just starting to plow.

Geneva Creek White River/Dillon
Pike/South Platte
970-468-5400
303-275-5610
Partially open 6/1/10
COMMENTS:
6/11/10 - The upper road is open now to the upper ponds, but is still blocked by snow above that to get further up to the mines/ Geneva lake. The lower road is still locked at the gate preventing you from getting to the ancient stairs. Smoothest and dryest in years. The creek is diverted above the summer cabin so you don't have to fight the creek and the rolling rocks down the trail.

Georgia Pass White River/Dillon 970-468-5400 Open 9/18/10
COMMENTS:
9/18/10 - Georgia pass was open all the way. No sign of the jeep-swallowing mud pit; just a few easy wet spots. Lots of traffic of all kinds - 4WD, ATV, dirt bikes and mountain bikes.
8/15/10 - Georgia Pass is open all the way.Area where mud pit was repaired is a bit rough. Another heavy rain could make it difficult for stock vehicles. I drove it in my lifted S-10 ZR2 with mud tires and had no problems but the conditions were dry. Aside from that area, the trail is in good shape all the way down.
7/27/10 - We have a friend who says that he traveled this route last week. He said that a cat has drained and cleared the mud pit so that it is now passable.
7/3/10 - No longer fully passable by stock vehicles. south side open to the top and easy. North side.....not so much. I can confirm the Jeep swallowing mud pit just over the north side. Nasty and steep spot to have to back uphill from. DO NOT ENTER unless you have major tires & lift or vehicle damage likely. This one's going to need a lot of large rock dumped into it to displace the mud, it's deep, about 4+ feet. Suspect it is being fed by a spring that was tapped into as the hole evolved from the first stuck vehicle.......this one's a showstopper. In 16 years of driving this pass regularly in stock vehicles, I have never seen anything of this magnitude develop and so severely limit travel.
7/2/10 - Ditto the last comment. We drove up from the Breckenridge side and also came upon the mud pit... No way to drive around it, about 20 feet long. Do not enter it with out a winch.
7/2/10 - The south side is as easy as ever, but about two hundred yards north of the pass there is a jeep-swallowing mud pit. I wouldn't drive into it without a winch or someone to tow you out.
6/27/10 - Open all the way - no snow. Trail seems a sbit easier thatn the lat time I ran it in 2007.
6/6/10 - From Breckenridge side, Tiger Rd. Got past the old house, but stopped by snow before the creek crossing and climb uphill begins. Lots of water at normally dry crossings. The usual stream overflow onto the trail in one spot. Got just past the old house another 1/4 mile and started hitting frozen piles of snow still blocking the trail. Another couple weeks will make a big difference. Have not tried the Jefferson(east)approach yet.

Grizzly Lake San Isabel/Salida 719-539-3591
Open 6/27/10

6/27/10 - Open all the way. Nothing different from previous years. Fish was not up to normal standards for this lake.
6/9/10 - The road is closed by snow and muddy conditions.

Guanella Pass White River/Dillon
Pike/South Platte
970-468-5400
303-275-5610
Partially open 6/5/10
COMMENTS:
6/5/10 - The Clear Creek County Road & Bridge Department has opened the summit at Guanella Pass. It is accessible from US 285 at Grant, over the summit to Xcel's Cabin Creek facility. Guanella Pass Road remains closed adjacent to the Cabin Creek Hydroelectric Plant due to rock instability. The summit cannot be accessed from Georgetown. If you need further information you may also check Clear Creek County's Guanella Pass Road Information line at 303-569-3251, ext 2, and the County website at www.co.clearcreek. co.us for updates.

COMMENTS:
3/7/10 - Closed at timberline. Several slanted snow drifts block the road on the east side.

Hagerman Pass San Isabel/Leadville
White River/Sopris
719-486-0749
970-963-2266
Open 8/13/10
COMMENTS:
8/13/10 Traveled from L.Ville to Basalt. Road was smooth gravel for the most part until a 1/2 mile past the old railroad tunnel on the east side. Just bumpy and rocky up and over...high clearance a benefit but not critical.
7/17/10 - Open all the way. Drove the trail from the Leadville side to Ivanhoe Lake. Just before the pass on one of the north facing slopes there is still a bank of snow/ice 5ft tall. Stock 98 4Runner and 00 Durango has no problem.
7/17/10 - Came up from Turquiose Lake and only went as far as the top of the pass. Vehicle is a stock 2008 4-Runner. No difficulty. Dry to the top, with no particularly difficult spots. Just past the Midland Railway sign the road gets a bit rough, but nothing anyone with a little experience can't handle. There is one spot that from a distance looks very narrow - almost scared off two other drivers, however once you get to the spot, it is plenty wide. Nice ride and wonderful views of Turquiose Lake that not everyone can get.
6/27/10 - Open all the way.The east side snowfield at the summit has been plowed and a path cleared, a couple runoff depressions to cross as you pass through. Some water crossings, minor. Some repaired washout areas, easy. Stock SUV could do this.
6/20/10 - From Leadville, the road is good until you get to about one half mile from the top, where it is blocked by large snow drifts. this is the usual place that blocks it every year. It is 3.5 miles up the road from the tunnel where the 4x4 road starts. Open part of road is dry and in very good condition.
6/6/10 - Per Forest Service, road still closed. Snow melting very fast with warm, windy days. Plowing is planned to clear the road but no schedule available now. Forest Service estimates open date to be July 1 but I believe it may be sooner with fast melt underway.

Hancock Pass San Isabel/Salida 719-539-3591 Closed 10/19/10
COMMENTS:
10/19/10 - No, blocked by snow .25 from Hancock Lake. Snow on Hancock Pass trail but did not attempt. Lots of snow up high. Attempted to travel from St. Elmo side. Almost got stuck in the snow about 1/4 mile from Hancock Lake and turned back there. Did not attempt the pass but from the Hancock townsite there appeared to be a good bit of snow on the trail and a lot of snow up high. I'm going to say its closed for the year.
8/28/10 - Open all the way. Washout repairs have been completed.
8/2/10 - Still closed, Chaffee County repairing now. Not sure when it will open, but hopefully this season. Lots of people messing with the work process by going up it even though its closed. No warning from Gunnison side that its closed.
8/1/10 - In process of Chafee County installing culvert pipe at washout on St Elmo side. May be 2 -3 weeks?
7/19/10 - Per the Chaffee Cty R&B person I spoke with, it will probably not be repaired this season. Dear old Forest Service is really dragging their feet in getting $$ etc. Probably would like to close it.
7/1/10 - Closed as a through-road due to washout.
6/22/10 - The pass is open and can be crossed from the West side. I crossed then turned around at the wash out and returned to Pitkin. The wash out is at Romley. No work has been started at this time.
6/8/10 - Hancock Road (FR 292) experienced flash flooding on Saturday, June 5th. The road is washed out for approximately 40 feet. The Forest Service is assessing the situation but the damage is very severe and the road will remained closed to all vehicle traffic until the road can be repaired.

6/27/10 - Open. No snow to speak of. One small tree was down across the road about 1/2 mile east of the summit.
5/30/10 - Hayden Creek side trailhead sign says 5 miles to summit. Large snow drift blocked the trail 3.5 miles up.

Iron Chest San Isabel/Salida 719-539-3591
Open 6/10/10
COMMENTS:
6/10/10 - Trail is open to the top. I diverted some of the water running on the trail so it would not wash out more. Will be a bit tough till the trench gets beat down. This is not a Forest Service trail, but is on private property. FS does not want us traveling on it, but has no say in the matter as it is on private property. The Road to Hancock is badly washed out and is closed.

Italian Creek Road/Upper Reno Divide Gunnison/Gunnison 970-641-0471 Open 7/16/10
COMMENTS:
7/16/10 - Trail clear all the way. Boulder on side of upper trail makes passing a bit tricky. Nissan Pathfinder(?) rolled about 100yds off the trail. Ugly.
6/5/10 - Blocked by snow coming from Cement Creek well prior to summit. Cleared two large trees and winched out stuck Nissan that had slid off the road.

Jenny Creek Trail Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Open 7/27/10
COMMENTS:
7/27/10 - Open all the way to yankee doodle lake. No snow, just the usual streem crossings and large rocks. Very nice trip!

Jones Pass Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Mostly open 7/17/10
COMMENTS:
7/17/10 - Pass is closed on the other side. Denver Water decided not to open the gate on the other side. Trail information is from an employee at the nearby Henderson Mine.
7/16/10 - Still closed at very top by Snow Cornice. There is a big hole, washed out spot not far after you reach treeline. Never been like that in past years. Higher clearance vehicles can do it, others maybe not. Maybe Denver Water will fix it so their trucks can make it up the road once the pass is open.

Kebler Pass     Open 6/1/10
COMMENTS:
6/1/10 - Lots of loose gravel, but it's definitely open with no problems. Some of the side treks (Lost Lake, for example) are different stories, though.

Kendall Peak and Kendall Mountain Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Open 7/3/10
COMMENTS:
7/2/10 - Except for the very top, open all the way. Good condition.
7/3/10 - Trail not clear all the way. I made it by shoveling about 50 feet of snow bank. Clear all the way to the top of Kendall mountain. Last 100 feet of road is blocked.

Kennebec Pass Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Mostly open 8/20/10
COMMENTS:
8/20/10 - Walk 1/2 mile to historic Kennebec Pass from parking-lot. Fine conditions to drive farther along the cliff.        to dramatic-rock-feature: the "Notch"-. We did NOT venture beyond high "Notch" on narrow cliff-road.
6/5/10 - Open almost all the way. Made it within 1 mile of the top of the pass. At the base of Snowstorm Peak the trail turns right and crosses the La Plata river when is a very small creek. Here is a section that still has snow as it goes along the side of Snowstorm Pk. It should be open in a week or 2. The side trails are open. I went into Tomahawk Basin and Columbus Basin. I also took Lewis Creek trail to the top. Don't let all the "No Trespassing" signs confuse you. The trail is public but at lower elevations there is private land on both sides of the trail. Just stay on the path. 5/13/10 - Closed according to the Forest Service.

Kingston Peak Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Open 7/1/10
COMMENTS:
7/1/10 - Open all the way. We crossed from Alice side. There was one snow drift just below timberline on the Central City Side. We made it through, but we were going down hill. It might be a little more difficult going the other way. Other than that, it was wide open.
6/20/10 - Not open all the way. Blocked about 1 mile east of Kingston Peak coming from Alice. Trail condition is clear except for one significant drift completely over the trail about 1 mile east of Kingston Peak as coming from Alice. Sizable drift completely across the road and right where the trail is fairly exposed, so passage was not possible.

5/30/10 - Only open for 2 miles but don't let that stop you. That is far enough to make it to the waterfall and with all the snow melt the waterfall is more spectacular than any other time of the year.

8/8/10 - Open all the way...can travel in both directions. Travelled the pass in both directions..... r elatively easy used 2 wheel drive in stock jeep wrangler for 99% of the trip ( even the several creek crossings)...
7/19/10 - Still closed due to fire.... anticipated to open August 1st. Great sand dunes park.
6/14/10 - West side of pass is closed to public travel between Castle Creek and the summit. Closed due to lighting caused fire, started on June 10. Fire crews are protecting park resources, but generally letting the fire burn in an effort to reduce fuel loads in the area. On Monday, June 14, a Dunes park Ranger thought the route would remain closed to the public for at least another week.
6/10/10 - Trail is currently closed (per local Forest Service office) due to a small local forest fire.
5/30/10 - Open all the way. Ran it East to West w/o any problem. Lots of water in Medano Creek but not too deep for a TJ with 2.5" lift on 33's.

Mill Creek/Red Elephant Trail Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Open 10/1/10
COMMENTS:
10/1/10 - The trail is open all the way. Mill Creek is no problem... just watch your mirrors! Red Elephant Hill is getting very tough. We ran it from the top and found 2 or 3 places that were difficult (going down!) Without very large tires and tall ground clearance, a winch WILL be necessary! Much of the trail is very narrow on a very steep hillside with little to stop you if you slip over the side.

Miner's Gulch Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Open 6/8/10
COMMENTS:
6/8/10 - Busted the remaining drifts and is now open for all types of 4x4s.
6/6/10 - This trail was open up until 150' from the end (heading south) where a snow bank forces you way off camber. The snow is melting pretty quick but the mud in the off camber position will pose a risk for a week or two.IMHO The water was high but passable in a Jeep.

Mosquito Pass Pike/South Park
San Isabel/Leadville
719-836-2031
719-486-0749
Open? 10/8/10
COMMENTS:
10/8/10 - Trail is open from the east to the pass but last nights snow has drifts a couple feet deep just over the pass on the west side. I hiked down 100 yards and did not get to the end of the drifts. Not sure if it will melt off as it looked like more snow on the way. This may be it for Mosquito this year.
8/1/10 - The "open" sign has been posted on the East side.
7/23/10 - Ignore the small (local?) sign near Alma that still says the pass is closed due to snow. The 2-ft deep trench through the last drift has melted clear and the trail is open.
7/18/10 - Traveled westbound from Alma. Some kind soul dug a pass through the only remaining snow drift blocking the trail on the east side. With all the activity I saw today, it's been churned up enough to melt out more rapidly in that spot. Got through it easily in a 2dr Rubicon. Otherwise, trail is clear to Leadville.
7/17/10 - Someone has shoveled a Jeep-width trail through the drift. It has not melted to gravel, but we went through with our 4-door JK.
7/17/10 - The snowbank on Alma side is still there, but only approx 30 feet wide now. As we approached the top we saw 3 ATVs cross the snow with only a little trouble. We tried to push through in a Land Rover, but started spinning out in the middle and opted to back out. Car coming from the Leadville side 5 minutes later got stuck in same spot coming down. We were able to use our winch to pull them through. Should be passable in the next few days.
7/11/10 - Came up from Leadville and all the snow is gone at the top. On the Fairplay side, there is a hugh snowdrift about 1.2 miles below the top that has everyone stopped from both sides. The drift has a nasty side slope to it and is about 75 feet long. Snow depths range from 2 feet to over 6 feet. Snow is soft on top with hard ice underneath. Will be at least 3 weeks before this ones goes away unless the county bulldozer from Park County helps out.
7/2/10 - We got 7 Jeeps up to the top from the Alma side. Had to winch across 2 drifts to stay on the road rightaway. The biggest drift at the saddle should be passable for travel without a winch in a week.
6/27/10 - Not all the way open. Traveled from Leadville to the top of the pass. Started down east side to Alma. Encountered snow 100ft below pass, took bypass around snow. Encountered snow 1/4 mile down the trail on a steep section of shelf road where the drift crosses the trail. This section is not passable.
6/20/10 - From Leadville side, made it all the way to the top in the ATV. Road is mostly dry but in very bad shape. Some snow along the side of the road by not a problem to get past it. Expect vehicle damage in a stock 4x4. Lots of washout on the road from the runoff. Just over the top on the Fairplay side, there is a large snow field that blocks the road completely.
6/6/10 - Didn't drive up but from the Leadville (west) side can see deep snow at the first major switchback, in the usual place that blocks further access. Forest Service estimates open date of July 1 and does not plan to plow the road. Snow melting very fast with very warm and windy days now.

Open 8/1/10
COMMENTS:
8/7/10 - Made it to the top without any problems. The washout has evidently been repaired. Full size Chevy Extra Cab was sitting near the top. The Road was very busy and in good shape.
8/1/10 - Road rough, but passable by good 4X4.Was rather large mud/rock slide at the first switch-back from torrential rain and hail- has washed out 2-3 feet of the road. So it is narrow if not impassible until fixed. Road maintenance is needed.
6/22/10 - The trail is open all the way to the top despite a small drift that is passable by jeep or foot. The creek is flowing but is passable. Very dry and minor snow issues.
6/15/10 - Road still closed by snow past the Baldwin Creek crossing.

Mount Bross Pike/South Park 719-836-2031 Open 7/31/10
COMMENTS:
7/31/10 - Mt Bross is open all the way to the top. The condition of the trail was better than the last time I ran it. Some of the tough switchbacks that had real loose rocks were in good shape. I still ran into one guy who's wife made him turn around. The trail might me scary because of the ledge and the fact that it is so high. The view from the top is one of the best. Can't beat sitting on top of a Fourteener.

7/10/10 - Trail is open all the way. Trail overall is in great shape. Lots of stream crossings. All spurs we attempted were in great shape with nothing getting in our way. Santiago Mine was in fantastic shape as well.
6/27/10 - The trail is open until about 1/4 of a mile from the top where you will encounter snow fields. There is ice underneath. Wait a few more weeks to let the snow melt. You can get to the Santiago mine no problem.

Napoleon Pass San Isabel/Salida 719-539-3591 Open 8/31/10
COMMENTS:
8/31/10 - Trail is open all the way. There are some muddy spots on the north side in the trees due to some beaver ponds. The trail gets too narrow near the top on the north side for full size rigs, but there is an alternative route in the wash bottom that is quite good. Awesome scenery on the top. We had 5 jeeps, a couple were stock Wranglers. The stock vehicles found the north side to be fairly difficult.

7/28/10 - Back open all the way again.
7/19/10 - Very very Heavy Rain During 7/19/2010 caused multiple land slides and washed out the shelf road not passable 30 feet of the shelf road washed about a mile from the summit heading back to highway 550 had to turn back and head back to ophir before we were stuck on the trail. Not sure if has been fixed yet. We placed cones across the trail coming from ophir. Road is Washed out with large boulders and about 2 feet of water was flowing in the washout.
7/8/10 - Good condition all the way, construction past town of Ophir, watch for trucks and heavy equipment.
6/10/10 - I haven't traveled it yet, but Ophir Pass is open per the San Miguel County Road and Bridge Department.

7/13/10 - Traveled entire trail without any obstructions.
5/21/10 - Trail is not open..... From US Hwy 50 near Cimmaron the road is blocked about 2 miles NE of the Pass. Roads were good and dry to Silver Jack Reservoir. Near that point remnants of trees removed to the side of the road is found. About 1 mile above the reservoir snow/ice patches partially covering the road making travel more tedious but at about 2 miles short of the pass a very large tree was blocking the road entirely. At that point I turned back.

COMMENTS:
9/29/10 - I agree with the 7/24/10 posting. The things I have read made the descent from the top down to Webster Pass sound hard. That was the easiest part of the trail. Yes it is steep and the road is all broken, loose rock and gravel. I found that 1st gear and low range and stay off the brakes made it easy. The exposure is less than the top part of Webster Pass. From the sign where the Red Cone Road splits with the Webster Pass Road is the hard part. The first 1.8 miles is very rocky and narrow and you are down in the trees. Stock vehicles are going to have some problems. It would not be a good trail for a novice. It gets easier for a little while but a lot of the above timberline climbs are steep and rocky again.
7/24/10 - Nobody ever posts any information about the trail UP to the top of Red Cone. All the focus seems to be on the VERY EASY trip down the hill. If you're in a stock vehicle, expect to scrape bottom at least a half dozen times before you get above tree line. There are a lot of big rocks with no way around them. Fun trail, not to be missed.
6/27/10 - Trail open all the way. Trail open all the way - no snow. Seems a bit easier than the last time I ran it in 2007

Schofield Pass White River/Sop`hris District 970-963-2266 Open 8/30/10
COMMENTS:
8/30/10 - We went up the Washington Gulch Road #811 to #734 over Paridise Divide to #319 and followed 317 to the Devils Punchbowl then down to Crystal and on to Marble. The road was dry all the way. Had to use the skidplates on my 1998 stock Jimmy going down to the Punchbowl. Did not have any issues, just took my time. Bueatiful trip. No washouts, had to cross the creek at crossings. Bridge at the Devils punchbowl was OK.
7/25/10 - The entire Schofield Pass is open. Rough like usual, easy with high clearance.
7/15/10 - I traveled from Crested Butte going to Marble. Snow blocking the road at the top of Devil's Punchbowl. Cannot go up or down Punchbowl. Still 2 feet of snow at top of Devil's Punchbowl. From Crested Butte to the Punchbowl, road in great condition.
7/13/10 - There is a 4-5ft snow drift right above Devil's Punchbowl coming from Marble side. There were 4-wheeler tracks going across the top of it but would not dare try to pass in a full size vehicle. We reluctantly turned around and took the paved road to Crested Butte.
7/3/10 - Still closed-- 2 large snowdrifts block the road on the Crested Butte side. The first one, some people were driving over, but the second one was not passable.
6/11/10 -Came up from Marble side to the town of Crystal. Road is washed out a bit in a couple of places from the Crystal River getting over its banks. Forest Service has done some road work and the road is OK. Didn't go beyond Crystal.
6/5/10 - From Gothic/Crested Butte: About 1/2 mile up from the road closure are two avalanche areas with lots of snow, trees, and mud. After the snow finally melts, it will require quite a bit of clean up before the road will be open. Right before you arrive at Emerald lake is also deeply covered in snow, there was a big mud slide and some large rocks rolled into the road. I'm guessing it will be much later than usual before Schofield is open.
6/1/10 - They had a barricade with a "road closed" sign on it shortly after the cut-off for Rustler's Gulch.

COMMENTS:
6/20/10 - Open to the top of Paradise Divide from the Slate River Road side. Trees have been cleared. Some snow right at the top near the pond at Paradise Divide, but navigable.
6/10/10 - Rough going. A downed tree you can squeeze past, two light water crossings, and then snow. I had to turn back because of snow across most of the road in one spot. Some ATV's had gone through on the side, but I wasn't about to do that.

Slaughterhouse Gulch Pike/Fairplay 719-836-2031 Open 7/24/10
COMMENTS:
7/24/10 - Great jaunt. Slog through mucky creeks, up rocky-sandy steep-slopes .
4/24/10 - Trail is passable through the whole loop. Little to no snow on the trail. Ice on the north facing sides, but, not enough to cause problems.
3/5/10 - The trail is not yet passable all the way. I was able to travel the whole loop minus one hill. If you drive counterclockwise you can get to the top of the final hill to the cattle guard. The long downhill stretch to the west of the cattleguard is still snow-covered. I did not want to go down without knowing I could get back up. I drove back to the beginning and went around the loop clockwise and was able to get to the bottom of the snow covered hill. I made it up most of the way until the ruts in the snow pack pushed me off the road and I could not make the bend in the trail. There were ruts from previous travelers that had slid off the road and I could not get out of the ruts and make the turn. With a winch, it would be possible to get over the ruts and possibly make the last two hundred yards to the top. The "difficult" spot on the trail was 95% clear of snow and entirely passable.

Spring Creek Pass Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Open 10/2/10
COMMENTS:
10/2/10 - The trail is open all the way to the Lamartine/ Saxon Mtn road. This trail is becoming "buggy country". Large diameter tires, high ground clearance, and possibly a winch would be in order. The rock gardens are difficult-- particularly the upper one. The third major obstacle going up apparently (judging by tracks left) is stopping many without winches. If the first "garden" discourages you, don't go any further, it only gets worse-- much worse!

Stony Pass Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Open 7/2/10
COMMENTS:
7/2/10 - Open and clear all the way from Creede to Silverton. Several areas that appeared to be recently washed out and now repaired. Pole Creek was maybe 12" deep at most. Everything good, clear and easily drivable.
6/27/10 - Open all the way according to the Forest Service, with caution advised at Pole Creek. Updates by anyone who has actually traveled Stony since the washout are appreciated.
5/30/10 - Closed due to a washout. The snow has been plowed. If you come from the Silverton end of the trail you can go 13 miles. Stony Pass is 7 miles so you make it well past that but later you will reach a spot where snow runoff has washed out the road. Only a pedestrian or maybe a motorcycle can get past this spot. It will take a lot to repair this section.
5/13/10 - Closed according to the Forest Service.

7/7/10 - Both sides are now open. The trail was very narrow getting by a large snow drift at the top, however the snow is melting rapidly.
7/4/10 - Opened up a couple of days ago. Wide enough for Jeeps to get through.
7/2/10 - We started at the St. Elmo side and were approximately .5 miles from the top of the pass before we had to turn around due to snow blocking the trail.

Tomichi Pass Gunnison/Gunnison 970-641-0471 Conflicting Info 8/9/10
COMMENTS:
8/8/10 - From the Gunnison side there is a sign at the Tomichi Cemetery area stating that it is closed due to a rockslide.
8/7/10 - Trail is passable. I saw the road closure sign at the Tomichi Cemetery after coming from the Pitkin side. The sign discourages travel on the road. Coming out of the trees on the Pitkin side is pretty narrow along the begining of the shelf that goes to the top. I helped a Jeep that did not have the front wheels pulling get down after almost dropping a tire over the edge. There were two other jeeps that made it successfully following that one. In my Polaris RZR there was plenty of room.
8/5/10 - Spoke with rangers office in that district & stated that the 888 county/forest road north of Hwy 50 a t Sargents is closed somewhere due to rockslide from the recent heavy rains in the area.
7/17/10 - Trail is open all the way. Made it though with FJ and Grand Cherokee.
7/1/10 - I came up Tomichi Pass road. There is a snowdrift at the very top. On the other side I saw no sign of any more snow blocking the trail. Should be open very soon. Even if you get over Tomichi Pass plan where you want to go from there. Hancock road is closed due to a washout.
6/15/10 - Road closed on West side at boiler. Road is covered with snow about 1/3 of the way from the top on the West side. A snow slide near the boiler in Brittle Silver basin covers the road with 3-4 feet of snow.

7/18/10 - Open, but the creek crossings are tricky.
6/13/10 - Closed according to the Forest Service.

Twin Cone Pike, South Platte 719-836-2031 Open 6/9/10
COMMENTS:
6/9/10 - The trail was open all the way to the top at 12323 feet. The trail was 98 percent dry with no snow what so ever. The only snow we saw was just below the very top of the trail on the side of the mountain. We did not run into any mud or stream crossings either. Very nice trip!
6/6/10 - Trail is open all the way.

COMMENTS:
10/2/10 - This trail is finally reopened. 9/30/2010 it had been blocked by a Dodge P/U partially off the road in a really bad position. Apparently they were able to remove him over the weekend. There are three erosion cuts on the low side of the road near the top making for nervous crossings. Roll-over potential is high if any miscues. Other than that, no worries.
9/17/10 - Trail is open as stated from a previous posting, but i caution all that the Handcart Trail going down or up to Webster Pass is eroding in 3 spots. If going down, the 3 eroded spot is the most serious and I mean the shelf road is nearly wide enough for a wrangler Jeep, but I had to ride my passenger front wheel up a foot or so to the mountain side and my rear driver's wheel dipped in the eroded part which kinda gave way. Next year i don't think anyone will be traveling this unless the 3 spots are well shored up!
9/2/10 - Open all the way. Bulldozer in on East side of trail resurfacing. Very easy climb now - Stock SUV.
8/12/10 - Traveled from east to west...road in rough shape...washboard on the east side and then pot-hole city after that. The west side was very rocky and bumpy. Nothing to difficult for a stock vehicle. I was driving a lifted LC 100.
8/7/10 - There is a washout 3/4 of the way up the 285 side of Webster pass. We crossed it, but it was way too narrow for safety. This road should be closed, or labeled for ATVs and dirtbike only, until the washout is repaired.
7/31/10 - Trail is open all the way, but like the last post says - someone will go off the trail if it's not fixed. I did this in a TJ and thought I was going to slide off near the upper switchbacks. I wouldn't be surprised if someone dies on this trail this year. ATVs should be fine for awhile.
7/31/10 - Sign indicates closed, but open all the way. There are a couple washouts on the switchbacks coming down. You actually drop a wheel down into the washout and it will just keep getting worse. If not fixed, someone is going off.
7/17/10 - Watch three TJ's travel over the pass from north to south. The cornice at the top of the south side still blocks a large portion of the road making the traverse VERY narrow. It should be in good shape by next weekend.
7/2/10 - Pass is closed by snow. We were at Webster Pass after doing Red Cone. Webster is blocked at the top by a deep drift and a fair size boulder below the drift.
6/9/10 - The closure gates are still closed. Based on history they will probably stay closed for another one to two weeks. The rivers in the general area, the Blue, Swan, and Snake are all running very high.
6/4/10 - Gate on North (Montezuma) side still closed. On the south side (285) its clear up to the flats below the switchbacks. Still a lot of snow on the switchbacks. The rocks at the beginning where Webster and Redcone start are gone. It is now just a dirt mound. Also the tippy corner has been straightened somewhat.

Open 6/5/10
COMMENTS:
6/5/10 - Open all the way, both directions. No snow on the road at any point. The bog areas on the west side are dryer than usual. I wouldn't take a mini van down the west side, but stock suv's and trucks with good ground clearance would do fine. No major washouts, but very rutted that first stretch on the west side just below the parking lot. Aspens are budding and leafing out, beautiful and scenic ride.

Wheeler Geological Area     Open 8/21/10
COMMENTS:
8/21/10 - Trail is open all the way. Trail is in good condition. the four wheel drive portion is about 13 miles one way..we did it in 2wd with stock wrangler..just a little bumpy and bouncy in a few places where there are small rocks protruding from the surface

Wheeler Lake     Open 7/31/10
COMMENTS:
7/31/10 - Trail is open to the lake. Trail was awesome. Besides the 3 or 4 really gnarly spots it was a neat time to run the trail because water was running down half of the trail. It felt like you were driving up a river before the final incline at the water fall. The switch back on the final climb is nothing like it used to be. I did this in my 2010 Polaris RZR4. I loved the look on the guys face in the jeep with the 35's and 6 inch lift. My RZR is locked front and rear and we did winch on the first obstacle mainly because everything was wet.
6/26/10 - Made it all the way to the lake. Lake was 80% ice covered. Bowling Ball Hill was tougher than normal, probably due to water under the rocks.
6/26/10 - Trail is open all the way up to the lake, no snow on the trail at all. Trail is in good shape. We took four jeeps up this today. Lake is about 1/3 still frozen. Fished the south end without any luck.

COMMENTS:
8/31/10 - Open all the way. Muddy sloshy rocky over the top, but in good shape compared to some years. The big rocks in the mud holes are doing thier job - we did not have any trouble with the mud.

Open 7/9/10
COMMENTS:
7/9/10 - Yes open all the way. THE flowers should be in full bloom by end of JULY if not sooner.
5/9/10 - This trail is open and passable to the pit toilets above Twin Falls. Trail is dry and wide to the intersection near Ruby Mining operations. From that point snow gets deeper on the sides of the trail and some snow melt runs across the trail as you get closer to the current end of the plowed trail.

Yankee Hill Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Open (care needed) 5/27/10
COMMENTS:
5/27/10 - The trail was dry for the most part. From the Alice side no one with 4x4 should have problems with the snow drift as you will be going down hill. The drift is about a half mile below Yankee Hill. Up hill heading to Alice you need good tires and some speed to make it through the snow. The drift is about 2 foot deep, 3 in places and about 30-40 feet wide. It's pretty soft but was passable. 5/21/10 - Pass is not open. I was able to drive to within a half mile of the pass from the east side before encountering snow drifts across entire road. Most of the east side is dry with an occasional snow/ice pack spot. I had to hike the last half mile or so to the pass which I found to be completely drifted over. ATVs have been crossing but do to warmer weather the snow is getting soft so I doubt anything larger will make it through for a few weeks.
