COLORADO JEEP TRAILS-
WHEN ARE THEY PASSABLE?
DATES FOR 2002

This information is submitted on a voluntary basis. As a guide, to see the dates and information from the 2001 Season, click here.
The status of many popular high elevation 4x4 trails is listed below and updated as the trails open or close. The list only includes the main trails and the updates come from many sources, including the National Forest service, the BLM, and interested individuals. As the Colorado mountain weather can be highly unpredictable, please check with the forest service yourself before travel for any recent changes. Conditions can change without notice. It is also subjective - a trail one person says is open, may be considered too dangerous to travel by another.
This list is intended as a guide only and no responsibility is taken for any incident arising from mis-information. The ultimate responsibility as to whether the trail is safe to travel, within the capabilities of yourself and your vehicle, or indeed open at all, is taken by YOU. Information compiled from many sources, including individuals, the forest service and BLM, but is not necessarily verifed. Where passes are left blank, no current information has been submitted.

REMEMBER - TREAD LIGHTLY

If you have current information on these or other trails that you would like to post on this site, please fill out the form.

Open and dry the whole way, including up into American Basin. One of the switchbacks going up to the pass after the American Basin turnoff definitely requires high clearance and probably 4X4 if wet. A passenger car bumper was beside the road here.

Italian Creek Road Gunnison/Gunnison 970-641-0471 Open!
Easy travel from Crested Butte to Taylor Park (or vice-versa). Drove up Cement Creek road from Crested Butte, over Reno Pass, and down Italian Creek Road to Taylor Park. Open all the way, no significant snow, very little mud. One tree across road, but an easy go-around. Close the gate behind you!

Red and White Mountain White River/Holy Cross 970-827-5715
Schofield Pass White River/Sophris District 970-963-2266 Open!
Descending from Crested Butte side is an approximate 200 ft. long snowfield which had a tendency to push vehicle toward the canyon drop off. Looks like the area has had a lot of moisture lately, making the rocks somewhat slippery.
7/6/02
Shrine Pass White River/Sophris District 970-963-2266 Open!
Easy trail, only one minor washout.
6/17/02
Taylor Pass Gunnison/Gunnison 970-641-0471 Open!
Now open, slight mud, no snow. Seasonal & usual water crossings farther east on FR761, no water over 12" deep.
6/9/02
Tincup Pass San Isabel/Salida 719-539-3591
Open!
Open and dry the whole way. This trail is very rocky from Mirror Lake up over the pass and some ways down the other side. The large imbedded rocks required a great deal of care in my stock 4X4 and took more time to negotiate than I had expected.
6/26/02
Tomichi Pass Gunnison/Gunnison 970-641-0471 Still closed due to a rockslide. Passable with an ATV but nothing larger. 6/27/02
