The status of many popular high elevation 4x4 trails in Colorado is listed below and updated as the trails open or close. The list includes the main trails plus some 2wd access roads. The voluntary updates come from many sources, including the National Forest service, the BLM, and interested individuals. As the Colorado mountain weather can be highly unpredictable, please check with the relevant information body yourself for any recent changes. Conditions can change without notice. It is also subjective - a trail one person says is open, may be considered too dangerous to travel by another.

As a guide, you can view the dates and information from the 2011 season, 2010 season, 2009 season, 2008 season, 2007 season, 2006 season, 2005 Season, 2004 Season,2003 Season, the 2002 Season or the 2001 Season.

This list is intended as a guide only and no responsibility is taken for any incident arising from mis-information. The ultimate responsibility as to whether the trail is safe to travel, within the capabilities of yourself and your vehicle, or indeed open at all, is taken by YOU. If in doubt, DO NOT TRAVEL. The inclusion of any trail on this page does not mean it is open or legal to travel. Conditions change, and trail status may change, sometimes without warning. Use common sense, and do not go around closure barriers.

REMEMBER - TREAD LIGHTLY

If you have current information on these or other trails that you would like to post on this site, please fill out the form.

Animas Forks Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Open 5/26/12
COMMENTS:
5/26/12 - Trail is open all the way. Upper sections near Animas Forks very rocky. A few years ago we took a Chrysler Towne & Country van up there, you wouldn't want to try that now.
5/2/12 - Silverton to Animas Forks via CR2 is open - not so much snow up there this year. It's still beautiful and no traffic now! The trail is in good condition.

Alpine Tunnel San Isabel/Salida 719-539-3591 Open 5/19/12
COMMENTS:
5/19/12 - Got to the top of Alpine Tunnel. Some boulders on the road had to be driven over - I'm on 37s so no problem, but don't think a stock vehicle could do it.

Ballard Road Fort Collins Region   Conflicting Reports 4/29/12
COMMENTS:
4/29/12 - I went up the atv trail in a jeep which is south (left turn) around 2 mile mark shortly after a small parking lot. This trail was eventually block by a large snow bank and fallen trees. I turned around at the same spot several Palaris Razrs turned around. I also traveled up the main trail which turns moderate, then difficult as guide book states. This trail eventually was also blocked by fallen trees and snow. This road is impassable for a stock vehicle.
4/18/12 - Trail is open all the way to the end. Took my Stock Isuzu Rodeo 4x4 on Ballard Road. Was in 2wd most of the time. Towards the end of the trail it starts to get muddy in places. Nothing too bad though. Snow in patches on the trail, nothing covering the trail though. Good scenic ride. No troubles.

Bangs Canyon BLM   Open 3/31/12
COMMENTS:
3/31/12 - Open all the way. The Windmill Loop and Tabeguache Trails are open. Be prepared for rough going with some difficult spots that many need lockers for.

Bill Moore Lake Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Open 6/9/12
COMMENTS:
6/9/12 - Open all the way. Snowbank has receded enough to pass by with no difficulty.
6/2/12 - Trail still not open- Snapped a photo of the snow blockage. http://i.imgur.com/Ctb5R.jpg
5/28/12 - Trail still blocked about .7 miles from the lake. From the size of the drift, its going to be awhile. There is snow covering some of the trail about 1 mile from the lake. You can get through the first couple hundred yards, but you may not want to bother as a big drift still blocks the trail just beyond where you first see snow.
5/13/12 - The trail is open but snow is still stopping travel about .7 miles from the lake.
5/12/12 - Trail was muddy due to rain, had a great time. got to the mud pit we think. all was still frozen. 2 of us got stuck and had to dig out. as you turn left after the mud pit , the trail was still blocked with huge snow drifts.
5/12/12 - Got to the valley just before you get to the high point and start heading down to the Lake. Trail in good shape. The chutes are almost graded and the big hill is about normal.
4/7/12 - The trail is open about half way (1/4ish miles past the turn off on the left to the "difficult" part that goes up hill). After that it is large drift after drift. I don't think the trail will be open for at least another month. Here are some pics of the trail condition.

Birdseye Gulch Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Partially Open 5/31/12
COMMENTS:
5/31/12 - Traveled trail North to South. Trail is open to within about 3/4 mile of the Mosquito Pass Road. Several off camber snow drifts still block last 3/4 mile. Turned around as we did not want to go off trail to circumvent drifts as this gets our trails closed. Hopefully will be open in one to two weeks.

Black Bear Pass Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-327-4835 Open 8/4/12
COMMENTS:
8/4/12 - Open up & down, and beautiful! We took our stock YJ Jeep up. Going up was spectacular. We ended up behind a tour vehicle, which helped us see where they had trouble areas - thus helped us know ahead of time. People hiking at the summit and spotted a camper with horse nearby. Going down a bit rockier/rougher. The switchbacks were impressive but more concerning were the rocky spots. Doable with patience and placement. A FUN, must do trip!
6/17/12 - Open all the way and dry.
6/15/12 - Open according to Switzerland of America website.
6/16/12 - Plowed to the top on the San Juan side. Not open past that yet.

Bolam Pass Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Open 6/22/12
COMMENTS:
6/22/12 - Open all the way, trees have been cut and cleared, snow fields are gone. It's actually getting fairly dry and brown.. Beautiful pass.
6/7/12 - Not open all the way. Traveled up from 550, trail blocked just past Greysills mine by very large fallen tree, 2ft diameter. Did not have the means to remove such a large tree.
6/4/12 - Not open all the way. Blocked by snow at Bolam Pass itself. Traveled up from 145. Removed one fallen tree only to be snow blocked 1/4 mile later.

Boreas Pass White River/Dillon 970-468-5400 Open 5/25/12
COMMENTS:
5/25/12 - Trail was open the whole way when we drove it that day. Road was dry, graded, and smooth. Driveable in a car and we passed several other vehicles, including a couple cars, on the way. Very little snow on the sides of the road even.
5/19/12 - West gate is open. Only drove up a mile or two. Ground was wet from rain and was getting dark, but the gate is open!
4/1/12 - Not open all the way. West side open approximately 3.5 miles from Hwy 9 in Breckenridge to winter gate. East side open approximately 4.0 miles from Hwy 285, just past the interseciton with Cty Rd 50. West side open and clear to gate. East side open with a few snow drifts.

Breakneck and Browns Passes Pike/Fairplay 719-836-2031 Mostly Open 6/8/12
COMMENTS:
6/8/12 - Blocked by snow: Drove down from Fairplay to Co Rd 5 to Breakneck Pass Rd. I took the 176 right turn off 175, and got to a large tree partially blocking the road. It had been moved, and there was a narrow gap, but too wide for my Jeep Laredo. I slid down onto the tree and had a heck of time avoiding damage! A narrow Jeep might make it, maybe. Needs a very large chain-saw. Went back downhill to the 175/176 intersection, and went up 175. A bit rough for my stock Jeep! Eventually got to a wide muddy area where sheets of snow blocked the pass. Some tire tracks indicated some had gone further, but it was probably ATVs. A returning ATVer said it was blocked. Needs more sun!
4/27/12 - Not Open all the way. Coming from Route 20 up the Browns Pass entrance. Made it all the way passed the cabins and down the big steep hill where a very large tree blocked the way. Had to back up and turn around. Running it from the other direction we had no problems making it all the way back around to the fallen tree. In the shadows of the forest on both Breakneck and Browns Pass there are snow drifts still on the trail but I had little trouble blasting through them. Otherwise the trail clear.

Calamity Mesa     Open 4/12/12
COMMENTS:
4/12/12 - Calamity Mesa Loop is open all of the way. This is a class 7 or 7+ trail and is about 20-miles in length from the New Verde Mine to the big yellow sign. There are 10 named obstacles and many not named. No full-sized vehicles. There are too many narrow places you won't fit through. JKs are very close to too wide. This trail was reopened in 2008 after having been close over 8 years. Most years since it has required several hours of work to reopen it again. This is one reason few people even know of this gem. Even the ATVs avoid it.

California Gulch Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Open 5/16/12
COMMENTS:
5/16/12 - Mostly dry with snow banks on both sides part of the way. Few puddles.

California Pass Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Open 5/16/12
COMMENTS:
5/16/12 - Trail is open all the way with some snow patches (minor that don't cover the road the entire road). Some mud also. Passable by 4x4, motorcycle with good off road tires.

COMMENTS:
Completely open all year.
4/1/12 - This trail is wide open and dry.
2/12/12 - Trail has up to 3 or 4 inches in spots, worst on the approach to/on the Whale's Tail and on the steep tippy hill near the end of the loop. The Chutes were completely dry and The Stairs had minimal snow. Went and checked the top of Carnage Canyon (winch out point) and it was dry. Looked like there was more snow down lower in the ravine. Picture of snow on Whale's Tail

COMMENTS:
4/7/12 - Open and dry all the way, including 204.
Completely open all year.

Chinns Lake Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Closed 6/8/12
COMMENTS:
6/8/12 - No, still a large snow drift, but melting quickly. Maybe another three or four weeks. There is a side step to the snow drift, problem is the second drift up higher is deeper. Hard area to turn around as well.
5/24/12 - No, no change in status from the 5/14 update. Snowdrift covers the trail maybe a mile to half mile from the top. Hiked up to the last bend, where the trail is completely covered in snow.
5/14/12 - Left trail to Chinns Lake still blocked by snow drifts. Fall River reservoir is open all the way to the top. A little snow on the trail but it has been broken through and is drivable.
4/28/12 - Still closed due to large drifts on the left fork to Chinns Lake. The trail to Fall River Reservoir is open except for the last 200 yards at the top. Still deep drifts in the shaded areas, but should be open in another week or two.

5/2/12 - Lake City FB page reports Cinnamon Pass open all the way to Silverton. No reports of road condition.

Coney Flats Boulder 303-541-2500 Closed 6/23/12
COMMENTS:
6/23/12 - Coney Creek was driven on June 23 by the Trailridge Runners 4WD Club. All of the downed trees have been cut. The Forest Service is keeping the gates closed until the weekend of June 30 to remove hazard trees from along the road. Coney Creek is dry with no snow drifts. The sink holes are all dry.

Open with care 11/11/12
COMMENTS:
11/11/12 - Went up during the last snow storm and there was at least 18" of fresh snow (was still snowing Sunday). We specifically went up to the begining of Corkscrew Gulch and about 1/2 mile up Brown Mountain trail (just to the north of Corkscrew). It's perfect for a group that wants to do some snowbusting before it gets really deep for the winter up there. DO NOT GO ALONE. It was 8 degrees that day. Pretty much from Silverton to Ouray was 18" of snow, so the higher mountain trails were getting pretty deep.
5/26/12 - Now open. Still a fair bit of snow.

COMMENTS:
7/1/12 - Gate is open, trail is open to the top. Went up it with a stock Liberty, it has some rocky spots after the first water crossing. Water crossings were only a few inches deep. Watch out for hikers on the trail.
6/3/12 - Yes. All remaining snow has melted off and the trail (and many mining road branches in the area) are completely clear. Trail is in good condition, a couple of 8"-12" water crossings through standing water.
6/3/12 - Open all the way. Be carful on the mine roads not a lot of room to turn around on them and they all dead end, they do not loop.
4/7/12 - No. Deep (1 1/2 - 2 feet) snow blocks the road a couple of miles in. Trail below snow blockage was completely clear/dry. A number of the lower camping areas are accessible.

Georgia Pass White River/Dillon 970-468-5400 Open 6/28/12

4/1/12 - Not open all of the way. East side open approximately 7.8 miles from Jefferson, CO on Hwy 285. Map. The road is in good condition until approximately 6 miles in. Hagerman Pass San Isabel/Leadville
White River/Sopris
719-486-0749
970-963-2266
Open 8/6/12
COMMENTS:
8/6/12 - The trail may not be open all the way depending upon the utility work. On Aug. 9, the work was on the west side, above Ivanhoe Lake. The top of the pass could be reached from the east side. There is heavy utility work on going on the west side of the pass. The power lines are being raised and the road may be blocked for extended periods of time by equipment. The trail up the east side is rocky but there are no major obstacles.
5/26/12 - Trail is now open all the way. On the West side just after the split with FR 527 there is a semi-deep water crossing about 150 ft long. Had no problem in stock Rubicon, lower clearance vehicles might have trouble.
5/19/12 - From Leadville, road is open only 2.6 miles from the Busk/Ivanhoe tunnel (where it becomes a 4x4 road). Large snowdrifts on the north slope block further access. On the way down, I spent 2 hours digging out a helpless couple in a Lexus SUV that were hopelessly stuck in a huge drift that I drove around in my ATV. They had no shovel, winch, chains, or tools. Drove right into the middle of a 2 foot slushy drift and buried the vehicle. What some people do amazes me.
5/2/12 - West side--open 10.5 miles past end of pavement to Ivanhoe and Lyle Lake (Hagerman) gates. Both gates are locked. Gate at Lyle Lake (leading up to Hagerman) had three large boulders placed in front of the gate, but the road had recently been plowed clear of snow beyond the gate. No indication what this might mean for later opening.

6/16/12 - Trail is open all the way. No snow drifts affecting roadway anymore.
6/10/12 - There are two snow drifts located 1/4 mile from the top on the St. Elmo side blocking travel for larger vehicles. Open for vehicles less that 50".
6/3/12 - Blocked just above timberline about 1/2 mile from top of pass on northern approach from St. Elmo. Snow drifts blocking road, will require another couple of weeks before passable at this point.
5/29/12 - Opened up trail from Alpine to Hancock. Busted through some drifts - Hancock open on Gunny side.

6/16/12 - Open all the way to the last switchback prior to the pass. Just past the switchback snow covers the last 2 or 3 hundred yards to the top. Other than being extremely rocky, road was clear.
5/16/12 - You can get almost 7 miles from the turn off up to about 11,300 feet in elevation. There is a lot of deadfall, snow and rocks that make the road pretty narrow in places.

Imogene Pass Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-327-4835 Open 8/1/12
COMMENTS:
8/1/12 - Open all the way.We went up in stock YJ Jeep. Pretty bumpy/rocky but doable. Many mining sites to check out. Summit is breathtaking. Below summit on downhill side, beautiful wildflowers (but was told by a local that we talked to there, that the flowers were not as thick as years past). Trail got narrower past the wildflowers & mine, and for a moment was confused if we made the correct turn - as there were other side trails. Several trail bikes and other ATV's in area. Rained on us which added more caution going down the slick rocky road - but an enjoyable day.
6/16/12 - Open all the way - very mild weather - this is the earliest Imogene has opened in recent history.
5/29/12 - Called Telluride district and they confirmed Imogene pass is open on the Telluride-side. Called Ouray district and they confirmed the pass is closed for another couple weeks.
5/26/12 - Open on Ouray side at least to 1st big waterfall. Blade work has been done to open that far. Trail in good condition up imogene/yankee boy basin. Lots have road work has been done. 5/26 a tree had fallen, blocking the road by "the mansion", but i assume it's removed by now. Snow 7ft up imogene pass, but bladed clean for travel.

COMMENTS:
6/27/12 - Trail is open passed all of the switchbacks. Snow stops you only about 50 yards from the actual pass. Trail is dry and in good condition. Very easy.
6/8/12 - Drove all the way to the two switchbacks at 11,800' past the small washout from a year or two ago. Road is dry and in good shape all the way to the 11,800' mark.
5/12/12 - Open approx. 1 mile from main (winter) parking area. Jones Pass open to main parking area near turn off of FS144.2 (approx. 10,500). There was some drifts getting busted on 5/12. Above is mixed drifts and dry. With some serious work could probably get to small switchbacks near treeline but large drifts there will stop traffic for a while.

Kennebec Pass San Juan Public Lands 970-247-4874 Open 7/21/12
COMMENTS:
7/21/12 - Yes, open all the way to the gap. Mostly dry all the way to the top. Looks like there's been some rain and the side creeks are running. A few potholes and low spots filled with water. 4WD recommended beginning 2 miles north of La Plata City, although I did see a guy in a Volkswagon Jetta attempting the road on the way up. There was a big pool of water and oil on the road when we came down in the area where he was. Took a side trip up Columbus basin, lots of loose scree and shale but it's passable. Slight washout beginning on the shelf road about half way up from the parking spot at Kennebec. Watch out, it's on the southside of the road.
5/28/12 - Open up to Colorado Trail. Few patches of snow on road near summit. Need high clearance as well as 4x4. And shovel!
5/10/12 - Forest Service states that they are a month ahead of schedule on opening but no for sure. They say early June but it looks good from base area. I will drive it and report back in the next couple of weeks.

6/1/12 - Made it from Central City to Alice 0n motorcycles and quads via Kingston Peak. One 25 yard snow field on east side.
5/26/12 - Trail is snow covered approx 1/4 mile from turn off to Pisgah Lake. This is on the NW heading toward St. Mary's Glacier.

Lamartine/Saxon Mountain Clear Creek 303-567-3000 Open 8/1/12
COMMENTS:
8/1/12 - Traveled all the way down to Georgetown. Slides are not cleared but drivable. Not recommended for stock or full size vehicles. Probability of additional slides is high.
7/11/12 - Large rock slide about two thirds of the way up. 100% blocked by huge boulders and debree. Looks dangerous because of the loose hanging rocks above the slide. I would not even try to climb over it.
5/29/12 - Open to the top.
4/21/12 - Trail is open to around mile 4.4 at overlook point, then becomes snow covered. The overlook provides a nice turnaround spot, so no worries of backing down.

Lead King Basin White River/Sopris District 970-963-2266 Open 8/2/12
COMMENTS:
8/2/12 - Open all the way. No real problem areas on the trail. Beautiful scenery.
6/3/12 - Open all the way. We traveled from Marble up CR 3 and veered left at the split going the harder route around Lead King Basin and circle back to Crystal from the east. The trail was completely clear of snow and was in good condition. What few tree falls that occurred over the winter have been cut out of the way by the local Jeep Tour business. There are a couple of really narrow tippy kind of places that make your heart beat a little faster but nothing that I would really call an obstacle. Unmodified stock jeeps can make it with the right tire placement. We were the only ones on the trail never passing another soul until we were near Crystal.

Open 6/11/12
COMMENTS:
6/11/12 - All of the repair work is complete on Marshall Pass (for now). Passing should not be a problem in June or July. Enjoy your ride. We will have some other road maintenance and decommissioning work later in the fall or next year in this area.
5/16/12 - Closed on the west side of the summit. They are doing road work and had the road torn in half at the bottom where the road crosses a creek. Cannot get past unless you take smaller trails.
4/28/12 - Open from the east. Able to drive to the summit of Marshall Pass from the east. There were a few drifts about 1.5 miles from the summit that had tracks through them. Another drift about a mile lower open on one side. Some fallen trees had been cleared.
3/31/12 - Bonanza Mine Trail (trail #44 in the Charles Wells book) Got about 1 mile in before a 6-8 inch snow bank covered the trail. The snow was the mash potato kind. Marshall Pass via Pohnch Creek (trail #43) - I got to Waypoint 3 5.6 miles (Starvation Creek hiking trail). There were several large trees that had blown down across the trail, but folks had already chopped them up and moved them so when the snow melts, the trail is passable. CR 203 - same thing. Ok, the wife was laughing hysterically the whole way down to the trail head. She thought that I was crazy to try anything close to the mountains this early. It was in the 70s during the attempt and the snow is melting fast.

McAllistair Gulch White River/Holy Cross 970-827-5715 Open 6/1/12
COMMENTS:
6/1/12 - Open from Shrine Pass to Resolution Peek. Both alternate routes up Mc Allistair are open. Was told it was open to Camp Hale but can't confirm. Please tread lightly, very fragile and people are tearing up the top. Creek crossings are very low. On a side note made it through the last snow drifts on Lime Creek. But this trail is slated to be closed by the Forest Service. so, may be your last chance to travel this road.

COMMENTS:
5/2/12 - The road is now OPEN to through travel. The second creek crossing from the west side is still somewhat deep due to beaver activity; crews will continue to work at this location. The second crossing is passable, but marked with orange cones to warn of possible deep water and for the safety of personnel working on the road.
4/5/12 - Still closed to through travel. On the east side of the range, the road is gated at the Muddy Creek crossing. On the west side of the range, the road is now open up to the second creek crossing, 5.5 miles from the western entrance of the road. The lowest campsites in Medano Canyon are now accessible.
3/31/12 - Trail is not passable yet. Attacked it from the north east side and the snow drifts are pack and sloping the hills really bad couldn't get more than a mile in before having to pull on jeep off the edge and then back down. The last foot of the right shoulder is soft pack from runoff and very dangerous. Then we drove the hundred miles to the sand dunes to try a go from that end. you can get about a mile in before you hit a gate and its closed. Can't even get to the first fording point. Total waste of a day. You can call the NPS for current information.

Middle St. Vrain Boulder 303-541-2500 Open 11/3/12
COMMENTS:
11/3/12 - Middle St. Vrain is open all the way. Coney Flats from MSV to the "lake" is open. The lake is frozen and impassable. Trail is snowy and icy but passable without too much trouble. The hill up Coney Flats from the MSV turn off is much more snowy and icy and will probably be impassable with any more accumulating snow up there. The deep Coney Creek crossing (the "lake") is mostly frozen and impassable. You can get about half way across from the MSV side before you run into ice around 4" thick that we could not break through and get by. If the weather warms up significantly, this could become passable again but I'm guessing the trail will be closed before then. We turned around at this point so can't report on the condition of the trail from this point down past Beaver Reservoir back to the highway.
6/23/12 - The Middle St. Vrain, and Coney Creek are cleared of downed trees. The Trailridge Runners 4WD Club drove through both roads on June 23. The gates will be closed until the weekend of June 30 so the Forest Service can remove hazard trees along the road. The Middle St. Vrain is dry. The water holes are low and the Coney Creek crossing is not past hub level.
6/6/12 - I called the ranger station today, 6/6/12, and the said the middle st vrain trail is a ways off from opening, she said maybe a month.

Mosquito Pass Pike/South Park
San Isabel/Leadville
719-836-2031
719-486-0749
Open 6/30/12
COMMENTS:
6/30/12 - It is open all the way. Went from Leadville side over. No snow on the trail at all.
6/28/12 - Lake County Office of Emergency Management posted the following on their Facebook page 6/27: [Breaking News]: Mosquito Pass is now open. Good news for the LT100 Marathon I'm uncertain if this means it's open all the way or just not entirely closed as it has been while they were fighting the Treasure fire near Leadville.
6/24/12 - Important notice: Mosquito Pass is closed indefinitely due to a forest fire below the road on the Leadville side, in Birdseye Gulch. As of Sunday the fire has burned 300 acres and is burning south, towards the Mosquito Pass road. Birdseye Gulch starts just north of the Mosquito Pass road about two miles below the summit and above the treeline and drains north into heavy timber where the fire is located. Check with the San Isabel NF on road status. Per forest service, road is closed in both directions as of 6/24.
6/17/12 - Not open all the way made it 1/2 mile down from summit Alma side had to turn around Snow drift covering 3/4 of the width of the trail for about 8 feet about a 1/2 mile in from the summit.
6/9/12 - Per forest service and 4x4 guys in Leadville, the pass is now open to the top from Leadville. the usual large snow drift near the London Mine has it blocked to thru traffic over on the Alma side. This drift is always the last one to melt every year.
5/28/12 - Going up from the Alma side pass is open to the London mine, Large snow drift at the London Mine...hiking only after that point.
5/19/12 - From Leadville, from the junction of CR3/CR3C (at the Diamond Mine), you can get 2.4 miles up the pass until you get blocked by solid snow about 2+ feet deep. Muddy and some drifts starting at 2 miles, but you can get around those. The blockage is at the first switchback to the right and near the crossing under the power lines.
4/27/12 - Traveling up from Leadville the road was in good shape. There had been a storm the day before which had dumped some fresh snow. Snow was about 18 inches deep in a low spot near the top and a little muddy. We decided it might be a little deep and didn't chance it since it was late afternoon and turned around and went back to Leadville. Hopefully I can go back in a couple of months and do it again.People with more mountain driving experience than me might have tried to cross but I decided not this time.

6/17/12 - I went as far as lake Como. It was tight fit by the large fallen tree, I sawed two branches off for more clearance. Loose and rocky, lots of brush JK took a few minor brush scratches.
5/27/12 - No. You can travel to within ~1.5 miles of Lake Como. There is a downed tree blocking the road ~1.5 miles from Lake Como. The downed tree is large and has fallen across the entire road, it will require several complex bucking cuts to remove it. Beyond that tree there are 2-3 other downed trees. Stock vehicles were seen as high up as 0.5 miles past Jaws 0.5

5/16/12 - Trail open all the way to the reservoir, but with large amounts of partially cleared deadfall making the road narrow in spots. Lake remains about 85% ice, should be gone in a week to 10 days. Billings Lake trail is completely blocked by deadfall.

COMMENTS:
10/7/12 - The Aspen side is blocked by deep, blown in snow on the last 1/4 mile incline before the summit. It was a good summer in the high country, but now it's extremely dangerous up high. Do not attempt crossing as the side hill angle and depth of snow will cause vehicles to go over the edge. Even with tire chains.
7/4/12 - 100% open both ways. No snow on the trail.
7/2/12 - I made it to the top from the Aspen side today. There is a short stretch of snow at the beginning of the boulder field, which required both lockers and single-digit air pressure, but at the present rate of melting, should be completely gone in two weeks. People came from the Crested Butte side, so we know there is no problem on that side. This is the earliest I've been to the top in the last 22 years. Let's all be careful in these extremely dry conditions. Two ATV riders left the road and rode across tundra at one of the ponds. This behavior cannot be tolerated, please feel free to speak up if you are up there and see vehicles off the trail.
6/26/12 - From the Aspen side, snow continues to block the road about 3/4 mi. above the Taggert-Wilson huts. The road is passable up to an elevation approaching timberline. All the usual locations have substantial snow remaining in spite of a dismal winter. Very little avalanche activity last season. Let's encourage all trail users to stay on the trail, and use a shovel if our way is covered in snow. Please don't "go around". The creek crossings are all in good shape, peak runoff has come and gone, and there is very little water in Castle Creek.
6/21/12 - Came from Aspen side, Still snow drifts but not until above tree line past the wet rock obstacle. The drifts we encountered were small but 3-4 ft deep off camber. Samurai able to cross / winch over.
6/16/12 - From Castle Creek Rd. the trail is open past huts to 11,400 ft.just below tree line where impassable drifts are encountered.
5/30/12 - On the Aspen side you can get about 100 yards past the Montezuma Basin Road turnoff where the Pearl Pass sign is and there's snow. Montezuma Basin Road is open almost all of the way to the Castle Peak Trailhead where there's snow.
5/13/12 - On the Aspen side, you can get about 1 mile past the creek crossing, where a snow blocks the road.

7/15/12 - Our group went with reps. from Blue Mesa 4 Wheelers to check out the condition of the section from the top of the Punch Bowl to Crystal. It was the consensus of the group that it is prob. safer now than before the slide. There are several large rocks in the crack at the outside of the road now. We did not do any work on the road As I am sure you know, Blue Mesa 4X4 club adopted this road over 30 years ago.
7/2/12 - : Schofield pass is open all the way to 4x4s. Traveled uphill through the punch bowl. There is a small rock slide across the trail 1/4 - 1/2 mile uphill of the last of the steps at the Punchbowl. The slide is drivable but off camber.
6/21/12 - Traveled to Marble from Crested Butte and back on 6/21/12. Open for Utv's and Atv's. The snow bridge is still tough to cross. Probably another couple of weeks to melt.
6/17/12 - Was closed 1/4 mile from emerald lake by barricade. Went up paradise divide side and went to schofields pass and found it blocked by snow just below Emerald Lake.
6/10/12 - Came up from Marble and all is clear until just before the iron bridge. 200 ft snow bridge passable but then a 10 ft snow wall was not. UTV's from Crested butte made it the whole way, wont be long for 4x4's.
6/2/12 - Closed on the Gothic side The usual snowfield just before Emerald Lake is blocking the road again. It's surprisingly large, considering how little snow we got last winter. It will take at least several weeks to melt - I'm guessing mid July? Other than the snow pile, the road is dry except for a shallow pond which has come up over the road at Rustler's Gulch turnoff.

Stony Pass Uncompahgre/Ouray 970-240-5300 Open 7/12/12
COMMENTS:
7/12/12 - The eastern (Creede) side is in bad shape. It's driveable, but a lot of work. Water crossings were all lower then we've seen in a while. We drove to the upper beaver ponds.
6/16/12 - Trail is open all the way, clear and dry. Trail condition is excellent, with recent work done on the rocky sections in the lower switchbacks on the Silverton side.
5/18/12 - Open as far as Pole Creek which is running very high.

6/8/12 - Trail is open from Taylor Park to Aspen.
5/29/12 - Open to top of Gunnison side if you go to the right of the lake long way is still blocked by snow.
5/14/12 - From the Aspen side--you can get about 1 mile from the top of the pass where a snow drift blocks the road -- might be 1&1/2 miles, you can see the top at that point. Road dry--snow slushy.

Tincup Pass San Isabel/Salida

Partially Open 6/15/12
COMMENTS:
6/15/12 - Trail is open all the way from both directions. There is still snow on the St Elmo side just before the summit. It is wide enough for a jeep and maybe slightly wider but not much more. Rest of trail on both sides was fine.
6/10/12 - There is a snowdrift 100 yards from the top on the St. Elmo side blocking travel for full size vehicles. Vehicles less than 50" can pass through.
6/3/12 - Blocked by large snowdrift about 1/4 mile from top of pass on eastern approach from St. Elmo. Probably another couple of weeks before this melts enough to be passable.
5/30/12 - Not passable yet. Stopped by snow about a quarter mile from the pass. Direction of travel was from St. Elmo.
4/26/12 - Started up trailhead from St Elmo but was stopped by snowpack at about 1.3 miles.

Twin Cone Pike, South Platte 719-836-2031 Open 6/5/12
COMMENTS:
6/5/12 - Yes - dry all the way to the summit. I believe it was mentioned last year, but the trail has been graded all the way to timberline. Above timberline, the last portion of the trail to the summit is still rocky and may give stock 4x4s a problem. There are still a couple of rocky play areas on the trail but they are now completely optional.
6/3/12 - Open all the way. Grated last year. Up to timberline is now easy, all opsticles were destroyed and put to the side. At timberline to the radio tower is still difficult with the last 100 yards requiring a lift, better tires, and skids at a min. No more then 3 vehicles at the top.

7/1/12 - Trail is open all the way.
6/9/12 - Gate is open on the Montezuma side. Still partially blocked with snow at the top. Trail is in good condition. Most of the trail is clear and dry to the top of the pass. Creek crossing is about 12" or so. Still too much snow at the top for a vehicle to pass, but cycles can make through. Another week or so should do it

Weston Pass Pike/Fairplay

Open 5/26/12
COMMENTS:
5/26/12 - Open all the way. Some pretty major pot holes, but rocks don't come more than four inches off the ground for the most part. Immediately past summit on west side there is potential for major mud issues, but dry at the moment.
4/7/27 - Partially Open. Made all of the way past the actual pass but had to back track about a mile and a half past the pass when I came across an unmodified Ford pickup truck with Oklahoma plates blocking the path stuck in a snow drift. No owner present We entered from the Hwy 285 east side of the pass and made it all the way to the very top of the pass with no obstacles whatsoever. Right at the crest of the pass an 8 foot deep drift fills the road but there is a drive around. On the west side of the pass, things started to get a little more challenging. There was a long nasty looking stretch of muddy ruts that looked much worse than they were. Tracks on the ground indicated most turned around here. We went on, the mud extended for about a 1/4 mile or so and snow drifts started to appear sporadically. Tracks through them indicated someone had made it, so we continued. At this point we noticed a Subaru off the road and deep in a gulch on southwest side of the road. I checked, nobody there looks like might have been there all winter. About 3/4 of a mile further and we came across the stuck Oklahoman. He had abandoned the truck on the trail between large bushes and snow drifts in such a way, I couldn't go around without great risk. No winch points and I wasn't going to tow the truck out of the way without the owner present. However we could see clear road on the other side of the drift he was stuck in.
